The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) and Hero Solar Energy Pvt Ltd signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for 4 MWp of solar power, which involves installation of solar panels on the rooftop of 22 Metro stations and buildings in the Metro yard.

This is the first 'Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO)' model project in Kerala. The first 1-MWp will be ready by October 2, 2016.

"Phase-I of the Kochi Metro Rail project envisages 22 stations and one depot. The installation capacity of the rooftop project is 4 MWp. In the RESCO model, the vendor will make the entire investment of nearly `27 crore, and take up operation and maintenance, while the KMRL will buy power from the vendor. Tenders were invited, and the work was  awarded to Hero Solar Energy (for 15.51/unit for the next 25 years). It is the lowest rate for which any metro project in India is getting solar power."
