Iran launched a new solar power plant in Semnan Province on August 11, 2023. The plant, which is located in the city of Damghan, has a capacity of 10 megawatts and is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 10,000 homes.
The launch ceremony was attended by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who said that the plant is a “major step” towards achieving Iran’s goal of generating 5 gigawatts of solar power by 2025.
He also said that Iran is committed to using renewable energy to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The new solar power plant is the latest in a series of renewable energy projects that Iran has launched in recent years.
In 2022, Iran inaugurated a 100-megawatt wind farm in the Khuzestan Province. And in 2021, Iran signed a deal with France to build a 1 gigawatt solar power plant in the Kerman Province.
Iran’s efforts to increase its reliance on renewable energy are part of a broader effort to reduce its carbon emissions.
In 2021, Iran pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. This pledge was made as part of the Paris Agreement, an international agreement to combat climate change.
The launch of the new solar power plant in Semnan Province is a positive step for Iran and for the global climate. It shows that Iran is serious about reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and about combating climate change.
