Dubaiโs Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated the installation of solar energy panels at the Dubai Metro Depots in Jebel Ali and Al Qusais, along with the Tram Depot at Al Safouh. Anticipated to conclude by the first quarter of 2024, the project is poised to generate a total of 9.959 megawatts of solar power.
Aligned with the Dubai Government’s “Shams Dubai” initiative and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, this undertaking underscores RTAโs commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Focusing on three key sectorsโpublic transportation, buildings and related facilities, and waste managementโthis initiative supports sustainable renewable energy sources.
Solar PV power systems play a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of RTAโs infrastructure facilities. Beyond cost savings, these panels contribute to resource conservation, carbon emissions reduction, and overall environmental sustainability.
The installation process comprises two primary phases: mechanical setup, involving the erection of supporting structures and mounting PV panels, and electrical setup, encompassing wiring and system connections. RTA anticipates an annual carbon dioxide emissions reduction of 3.962 tons.
The solar energy production breakdown includes 3.165 megawatts at Jebel Ali Metro Depot, 3.804 megawatts at Al Qusais Metro Depot, and 2.990 megawatts at Al Safouh Tram Depot. With a lifespan of 25-30 years, a maintenance program will monitor energy production and operational efficiency.
Recognized in the MEP Middle East Awardsโan esteemed regional accolade highlighting achievements in mechanical and electrical engineeringโthe solar panel installation project on RTAโs buildings and facilities attests to the organizationโs commitment to sustainable practices.
