India is actively advancing its commitment to renewable energy and power, aligning with the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which emphasizes the goal of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power, Shri R. K. Singh, highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by the Indian government.
One significant stride is the announcement of an annual bidding trajectory for 50 GW of renewable energy capacity for the next five years, starting from the financial year 2023-24. Additionally, a trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) up to 2030 and the release of the Procedure for Implementation of Uniform Renewable Energy Tariff demonstrate a structured approach to achieving renewable energy targets.
To facilitate the expansion of renewable energy, the government is establishing Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks, offering a plug-and-play environment for developers. Infrastructure development includes laying new transmission lines and creating substations for efficient renewable power evacuation. Importantly, the waiver of Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for solar and wind power projects commissioned by June 2025 aims to incentivize inter-state sales.
The government is also fostering local manufacturing through the launch of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules. Furthermore, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export.
On the international front, India is actively engaging with countries through bilateral agreements and multilateral platforms like QUAD, IPEF, IRENA, COP28, CEM/MI. A noteworthy effort is the provision of Rs. 100 crore per year to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for the financial years 2022-23 to 2024-25. ISA, in turn, is utilizing these funds to promote global energy transition through actions such as a global solar stocktake, the establishment of a Global Solar Facility, capacity building with STAR Centres, and pilot projects in Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. These initiatives collectively underscore India’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy practices globally.
