His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, witnessed the grid connection of renewable energy projects totaling 1.4 gigawatts (GW) developed by Masdar, a prominent clean energy company based in Abu Dhabi. This event highlighted the close ties between the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan, emphasizing their partnership in investing and developing renewable energy in Uzbekistan.
During the ceremony, President Mirziyoyev, alongside Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar’s CEO, and several high-level government officials, celebrated the grid connection of the Zarafshan wind farm and three solar projects in Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Sherabad. These projects represent a significant leap in solar development within the region.
In addition to the grid connection ceremony, Masdar signed an implementation agreement with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Investments, Industry, and Trade. This new agreement aims to develop an additional 2 GW wind project and deploy battery storage systems across five existing Masdar projects in Uzbekistan, amounting to 1,150 megawatt-hours (MWh) of capacity. This increased Masdar’s total investment in Uzbekistan to approximately USD $4 billion.
HE Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President, highlighted the ambitious climate agenda set at COP28, focusing on transitioning to clean energy and reducing harmful emissions. These initiatives align with Uzbekistan’s targets of achieving 7 GW of solar and 5 GW of wind capacity by the end of the decade.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed pride in contributing to Uzbekistan’s clean energy objectives and reaffirmed Masdar’s commitment to the nation’s energy targets. Masdar has been active in Uzbekistan since 2019 and has undertaken various solar and wind projects aimed at bolstering the country’s renewable energy capacity.
