In a strategic move that marks a significant development in the energy sector, Grenergy has entered into a collaboration with BYD, a leading high-tech multinational company. The partnership revolves around the supply of large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) featuring batteries with an impressive capacity of 1.1 GWh.
As part of this strategic alliance, BYD is set to provide Grenergy with a total of 2,136 units of its MC Cube ESS model. Distinguished by its Blade battery technology, this storage system is renowned for its elevated safety standards, extended lifespan compared to market alternatives, and outstanding performance. Grenergy is slated to integrate these systems into the initial and subsequent phases of the Oasis de Atacama project.
The Oasis de Atacama initiative, with a global capacity of 4.1 GWh and a solar power generation capacity of 1 GW, stands as the world’s largest storage project. The ambitious project commands a total investment of US$1.4 billion, with the first phase anticipated to commence operations in 2024, followed by the second phase in 2025.
This collaboration signifies a pivotal stride in Grenergy’s growth strategy, closely intertwined with the burgeoning field of energy storage. Holding a leading position in this sector, Grenergy plans to channel an investment of EUR800 million to propel battery advancements, as revealed during its recent Capital Markets Day. Presently, the company boasts a portfolio exceeding 10 GWh in energy storage across various developmental stages.
David Ruiz de Andrรฉs, CEO of Grenergy, commented on the agreement, stating, “The agreement with a leading company like BYD demonstrates our firm commitment to energy storage and represents a major step forward in securing the supply needed to be able to develop and build the battery projects we have recently announced.”
Guo Bin, Overseas Sales Managing Director of BYD Energy Storage, shared his perspective on the partnership, noting, “The Oasis de Atacama project in Chile, in partnership with a leading and global company such as Grenergy, is a new milestone for BYD Energy Storage in its current business landscape with a presence in more than 70 countries. It is also a firm step towards realizing BYD’s ‘Three Green Dreams’ โ creating a clean and sustainable world comprised of electric vehicles, solar energy, and energy storage systems.”
