E.ON One has been chosen to participate in the TwinEU project, a Horizon Europe initiative funded by the European Union to support the REPowerEU plan. The primary objective of TwinEU is to facilitate the development of a digital twin for the European power grid, aimed at enhancing the management, operations, and resilience of the EU electricity system.

Launched officially on January 1, 2024, the project brings together 75 partners from various European countries and is backed by a total funding of โ‚ฌ20 million over a span of 3 years. E.ON One will play a pivotal role in TwinEU, not only contributing to several working packages but also spearheading the German demonstrator.

The digital transformation of the energy sector is paramount in realizing the objectives outlined in the REPowerEU plan, which emphasizes energy conservation, clean energy production, and diversification of the EU’s energy sources. Digital twins of the power grid offer a promising solution to address the growing complexity of energy systems and mitigate the impacts of fluctuations in the energy market.

TwinEU encompasses eight major demonstration projects, with E.ON One leading the efforts in the German demonstrator. Collaborating with E.ON and its subsidiaries such as Westnetz, E.ON Energie Deutschland, and envelio, E.ON One aims to further explore, develop, and enhance digital twin technology to showcase its role in enhancing the scalability and resilience of grids. The solutions developed will undergo testing in Westnetz’s network, with E.ON Energie Deutschland serving as the market aggregator, and envelio providing the Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP), a software solution that forms the basis for most of the project’s use cases.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Tim van Amstel, CEO of E.ON One, welcomed the selection of E.ON One for the TwinEU project. He emphasized the collaborative effort among leading European energy companies to develop innovative grid software crucial for driving the energy transition. Van Amstel believes that TwinEU will expedite the innovation cycle and foster greater integration of digital solutions in the energy sector, aligning with the overarching objectives of the REPowerEU plan.
