The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh, has announced the launch of a Center for Energy Transition, a joint venture between the Indian government and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The declaration came during the 23rd World Sustainable Development Summit held in New Delhi. The Minister highlighted the center’s role in identifying pathways for sustainable energy transition and fostering innovation within the renewable energy sector.
During the summit session themed “Energy Transitions for People, Peace, Prosperity, and our Planet,” Minister Singh emphasized India’s leadership in climate action and energy transition. He cited India’s significant progress, with 44% of power generation capacity derived from non-fossil-fuel sources, primarily renewables. Singh noted India’s exceptional rate of energy transition, being the sole country issuing bids for round-the-clock renewable energy and achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of schedule.
Singh addressed the disparity in carbon emissions, attributing 77% of legacy emissions to developed countries while underscoring India’s modest contribution despite its large population. He called for developed nations to vacate carbon space to accommodate developing countries’ growth.
The Minister critiqued the discourse on emissions, emphasizing per capita emissions as crucial. He advocated for addressing emissions from all sources, including coal and gas, while highlighting the need for energy storage capacity and international cooperation in technology transfer and financing for sustainable development.
Singh echoed Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on sustainable development, particularly through initiatives like Mission LiFE and the promotion of green vehicles and hydrogen production. However, he cautioned against protectionist trade barriers hindering progress, calling for collective reevaluation.
TERI Governing Council Chairperson, Nitin Desai, announced the establishment of the Center in Hyderabad to develop comprehensive energy transition pathways. TERI’s Director-General, Vibha Dhawan, reiterated the institute’s commitment to sustainability and collaboration in addressing climate challenges.
The World Sustainable Development Summit 2024 served as a platform for discussions and collaborations toward sustainable development goals. India’s initiatives, including the Center for Energy Transition, underscore its commitment to a greener future.
