In a strategic working session Mr. Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), joined representatives from GIZ ESP and leading German companies in Vietnam to explore the potential of the green hydrogen industry in the country.

Key discussions highlighted:

  1. Critical Role of Green Hydrogen (GH2) in the Power Sector: Acknowledging GH2’s vital role in Vietnam’s energy transition, especially during periods of renewable energy surplus and system inflexibility.
  2. Challenges in Market Design and Mechanisms: Recognizing impediments caused by the lack of a clear GH2 definition in power market design and essential mechanisms for industry progress.
  3. Need for a Comprehensive GH2 Roadmap: Emphasizing the necessity to formulate a comprehensive roadmap for GH2 to guide stakeholders in shaping the industry’s future.

Delegates underscored the untapped potential of GH2 across various industries in Vietnam. Proposals were made to leverage mechanisms such as the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to provide technical and financial support to Vietnam, facilitating the growth of the green hydrogen industry.
