Saudi Arabia-Kazakhstan Energy Collaboration: Strategic Program Signed In Astana

In the presence of His Excellency President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, an executive program for cooperation between the Government of the Kingdom and the Government of Kazakhstan was signed in Astana, Kazakhstan. Present at the signing were Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of Energy, and Almasadam Satkalyev, the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan.

This program, which stems from a memorandum of understanding established between the two countries on June 12, 2023, encompasses collaboration in various energy sectors, including oil, gas, refining, petrochemicals, electricity, renewable energy, clean hydrogen, energy efficiency, and energy storage.

The objective of the program is to implement projects in Kazakhstan related to renewable energy, innovations, addressing global warming, and supporting initiatives aligned with the energy security and transition priorities of both nations. It also aids Kazakhstan in achieving emission reduction goals, including neutrality by 2060. Furthermore, the program facilitates close cooperation between companies from the Kingdom and Kazakhstan across different relevant fields.

As outlined in the program, the parties involved will work together on the construction of a 1 GW wind power plant in the Zhetysu region, near the Dzungarian Gate, with ACWA Power leading the alliance. The commencement of the wind power plant construction is scheduled for the summer of 2025.

Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder & Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACWA Power, commented on the announcement, stating, “By forming strategic partnerships, ACWA Power is dedicated to actively contributing to Kazakhstan’s aspirations, undertaking a significant role in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. Our cooperation goes beyond mere investment; it reflects our commitment to bolstering Kazakhstan’s energy development objectives, aligning with ACWA Power’s vision for a future driven by clean energy.”
