The project, set to power the equivalent of over 27,000 homes annually in the Lone Star state, represents Walmart’s continued commitment to expanding clean energy capacity. Through the PPA, Walmart will serve as an offtaker for 162 MWac, adding to its existing procurement from EDPR NA projects totaling 233 MWac of utility-scale solar and wind energy, along with 36 MWac of distributed solar.

The collaboration also highlights Walmart’s dedication to fostering economic growth in local communities. The project is expected to provide millions of dollars in payments to landowners and an estimated $42 million to local governments, benefiting schools, infrastructure, and essential public services over its operational lifespan.

Moreover, the project has already begun its community engagement efforts by donating $10,000 to the local school district near the site. Through partnerships with local businesses, landowners, and community members, the project aims to generate increased local investment, supporting various sectors such as retail, hospitality, and construction-related businesses.

Construction of the solar project is anticipated to create approximately 300 full-time equivalent jobs, with three permanent operations positions once operational.

This venture builds upon Walmart’s extensive renewable energy portfolio, which includes over 600 on- and off-site projects in more than 10 countries. With a goal to enable up to 10 gigawatts of new clean energy projects by 2030, Walmart remains committed to reducing its overall carbon footprint while supporting local economies.

Frank Palladino, VP of Renewable Energy Strategy at Walmart, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing its alignment with Walmart’s mission to help communities save money and live better. Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the shared goal of driving environmental stewardship and improving quality of life for communities.

The collaboration between Walmart and EDPR NA spans both utility-scale and distributed generation projects. In Texas, where EDPR NA is one of the top renewable energy developers and operators, Walmart has procured 395 MW of utility-scale PPA, enough to power over 68,000 homes, in addition to 36 MWac of distributed solar.
