In the latest developments from the Indian renewable energy sector, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued an official memorandum announcing significant updates to solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturers. According to the memorandum numbered 283/16/2023-GRID SOLAR, dated 29th March 2024, the MNRE has stated that the Approved Models and Manufacturers of Solar Photovoltaic Modules (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2019 (ALMM Order), initially put on hold for the fiscal year 2023-24, is now set to come into effect from 1st April 2024.

The ALMM list, which is intended to streamline the adoption of approved solar module models and manufacturers, has been under discussion for a financial year. The initiative aims to assure the quality of solar modules used in various projects across the country. Solar PV modules that have been received at project sites by the 31st of March 2024 but are yet to be commissioned due to reasons beyond the control of the renewable power developer will be subject to separate examination.

The memorandum further notes that the decision has been made with the approval of the Honorable Minister of Power & Renewable Energy. This policy update is seen as a move to bolster Indiaโ€™s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, with an emphasis on maintaining high standards for equipment used.

The MNRE has directed that this memo be circulated to all concerned parties and has also requested the Director (Technical), NIC, MNRE, to ensure it is uploaded to the MNRE website for public accessibility. This is seen as a part of the government’s efforts to maintain transparency and communication with stakeholders in the solar energy sector.

Sanjay G. Karnadhar, Scientist-E at the MNRE, signed the memorandum and provided his email for further queries, marking a significant step towards Indiaโ€™s sustainable energy future.
