Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Uniper, a prominent global energy merchant and major power producer, have joined forces to drive collaboration in the production, transportation, and marketing of green hydrogen from the HØST PtX Esbjerg project. Situated on the Danish Westcoast, this venture aims to supply green hydrogen to the German market.
The HØST project is anticipated to be connected to the German hydrogen backbone by the end of 2028 through a new hydrogen pipeline, developed by Danish transmission system operator Energinet in cooperation with Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services. This strategic move will facilitate access to consumption sites in Germany, fostering the availability of competitively priced green hydrogen in the market.
In partnership, CIP and Uniper will work towards delivering up to 140,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to customers in Germany. Uniper plans to integrate the green hydrogen from HØST into its green gas portfolio, catering to varying flexibility profiles and offering different contract lengths to meet industry needs.
Holger Kreetz, Uniper’s COO, highlighted the significant potential of this collaboration in alignment with Uniper’s strategic target of achieving at least 1 GW installed electrolyser capacity by 2030. He also underscored Uniper’s commitment to ensuring competitive and secure supplies aligned with customer requirements.
Karsten Plauborg, a partner at CIP, emphasized the importance of this partnership for both CIP and the HØST PtX Esbjerg project. With abundant renewable energy potential from the North Sea and the planned hydrogen pipeline connecting Denmark to Germany, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in bringing green hydrogen from the HØST project to German customers. Plauborg noted that while CIP boasts a substantial portfolio of power-to-gas projects, Uniper’s strong position with German energy customers plays a pivotal role in establishing this new market.
