EGAT, EDL, Chiyoda, And Mitsubishi Forge Alliance For Green Hydrogen And Ammonia In Thailand

In a landmark move towards advancing green energy and propelling Thailand closer to its Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero Emissions targets, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Électricité du Laos (EDL), Chiyoda Corporation (CYD), and Mitsubishi Company (Thailand) Ltd. (MCT) have inked a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC).

The agreement sets the stage for collaborative efforts to explore the utilization of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in cross-border initiatives. The aim is to harness renewable energy from Laos for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia in potential sites across Thailand. Moreover, the partnership seeks to identify business prospects for these sustainable fuels both domestically and internationally.

At the ceremony held at the EGAT Headquarters in Nonthaburi Province, Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, EGAT Governor, and Mr. Vongsakoun Yingyong, Managing Director and CEO of EDL, formalized the agreement. Witnessed by Mr. Yasuhiro Inoue, General Manager of CYD’s Hydrogen Business Department, and Mr. Kazuhiro Watanabe, Senior Vice President of MCT, the signing marks a significant milestone in the realm of renewable energy cooperation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thepparat Theppitak emphasized the strategic importance of the MOU, highlighting EGAT’s commitment to leveraging hydropower resources from Laos to drive down the cost of clean energy production in Thailand. By enhancing competitiveness in both domestic and global markets, the initiative aims to foster the continuous development of hydrogen-related projects while mitigating carbon emissions.

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Vongsakoun Yingyong underscored Laos’ potential as a key renewable energy source and emphasized the importance of international collaboration in realizing a greener future. As the custodian of Laos’ power infrastructure, EDL views this partnership as a gateway to advancing renewable energy utilization and strengthening regional ties.

Mr. Yasuhiro Inoue of CYD expressed optimism regarding the project’s potential to spur green hydrogen and ammonia production. Leveraging CYD’s expertise as an engineering powerhouse, the company is poised to provide technical support and contribute to the expansion of clean energy initiatives across Thailand, Laos, and Japan.

Lastly, Mr. Kazuhiro Watanabe emphasized the pivotal role of the collaboration in establishing Thailand as a hub for green hydrogen production. By leveraging the RECs mechanism to import renewable energy from Laos, the initiative aims to enhance competitiveness and bolster clean energy development, aligning with global ambitions for Carbon Neutrality.

With this collaborative endeavor, EGAT, EDL, Chiyoda, and Mitsubishi are charting a course towards a sustainable energy future, paving the way for transformative change in the region and beyond.
