In a significant stride toward fulfilling Israel’s aspiration to become a dominant force in regional energy, a delegation led by Yossi Dayan, Director General of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, embarked on a mission to Cyprus. The primary objective: to champion the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) Project, linking Israel’s power grid with Cyprus and Greece.
Director General Dayan emphasized that this venture aligns with the Minister’s vision, positioning Israel as a pivotal player in the energy landscape. The GSI holds the key to intertwining Israel with the European energy network, fostering resilience by enabling both power supply and backup during crises.
The delegation, including prominent figures like Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Authority Amir Shavit and Noga’s CEO Shaul Goldstein, engaged in pivotal discussions with key stakeholders. Meetings with Manos Manousakis, CEO of the Greek Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), and Charalambos Rousos, Director for Energy in Cyprus’ Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, underscored the collaborative effort driving the GSI forward.
The GSI project encompasses two critical segments: Israel-Cyprus and Cyprus-Greece (Crete), with connections to mainland Greece facilitated through the Crete โ Attica interconnection. With groundwork already underway, the focus now shifts to expediting decisions regarding the Israel-Cyprus link.
Minister Eli Cohen’s broader vision encompasses enhanced energy infrastructure integration across the Mediterranean, fostering energy trade among regional states. Beyond bolstering energy security, this initiative promises resource diversification, solidifying Israel’s standing as an energy stronghold.
This momentum follows a productive visit from Cyprus’ Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou, to Israel earlier this year. Both nations committed to swift collaboration in realizing the GSI Project, amplifying their partnership within the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) and laying the groundwork for regional energy cooperation.
