Asahi India Glass Limited (AIS) and INOX Air Products (INOXAP) have embarked on a pioneering partnership, launching India’s first green hydrogen plant specifically for the float glass industry. Located at AISโs new facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, the plant will harness solar energy to produce up to 190 tons of green hydrogen annually through electrolysis, with the first phase delivering 95 tons per year.
Set to commence operations by July 2024, this initiative marks a significant stride towards sustainable industrial practices. INOXAP will oversee the plant’s design, engineering, installation, and long-term operation, ensuring a consistent hydrogen supply over a 20-year period. Meanwhile, AIS will finance the solar infrastructure essential for the hydrogen production, aligning with their comprehensive sustainability strategy.
The venture aims to meet 94% of the plantโs energy needs through renewable sources, with additional plans to convert flue gases into electricity. This approach not only emphasizes AIS’s commitment to sustainability but also supports India’s broader environmental objectives.
Rupinder Shelly of AIS highlighted the projectโs alignment with their goals for sustainability and decarbonization, expressing pride in setting a precedent in the float glass sector. Similarly, Siddharth Jain of INOXAP noted the projectโs potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 1250 MTPA, reinforcing the companyโs role in advancing Indiaโs green manufacturing capabilities.
This collaboration between AIS and INOXAP is part of a national push towards a greener economy, underscored by the Indian government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The initiative represents a significant step in India’s journey towards decarbonization and sustainable energy solutions.
