Leveraging its extensive experience and steadfast dedication to the region spanning over five years, Voltalia has secured a 130-megawatt solar project in the Gafsa region. The anticipated output of this forthcoming power station will match the energy needs of over 700,000 inhabitants.
Revenue for the project will be sourced from a 30-year power sales agreement with STEG (Sociรฉtรฉ Tunisienne de l’รlectricitรฉ et du Gaz), the entity responsible for operating Tunisia’s public grid.Tunisia aims to raise its renewable energy electricity production to 30% by 2030, a significant leap from the 2.2% recorded in 2023. Given its abundance of over 300 days of sunshine annually, solar power presents a notably competitive alternative to thermal plants heavily reliant on imported natural gas. However, Tunisia faces considerable climate change risks due to its reliance on climate-sensitive agriculture and high level of urbanization, which makes it vulnerable to flooding.
Construction is slated to commence in 2025, with commissioning anticipated for 2026.
Sรฉbastien Clerc, CEO of Voltalia, said, “We are delighted to have won this project. Thanks to attractive climate conditions, supportive governmental policies and strong support from international financial institutions, Tunisia has a great renewable energy potential in the short and long term.”
