In a bid to ramp up efforts towards bolstering global climate action, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), recently convened a high-level meeting with a delegation from the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) for MENA and South Asia. The session, held at the WGEO headquarters, delved into fostering opportunities for capacity building to reinforce national climate action plans, marking a pivotal stride towards sustainable development.
Central to the discussions was the delineation of strategic avenues for capacity enhancement, as both entities pledged collaboration under the aegis of the Global Alliance for Green Economy, spearheaded by the UAE Government and WGEO. Emphasizing the critical role of technical and technological assistance, the alliance aims to facilitate countries’ transition towards green economies while fortifying support mechanisms for inter-country exchanges.
Key areas of collaboration were charted out during the meeting, with a special focus on bolstering the Global Innovation Hub, a cornerstone initiative aimed at fostering breakthrough solutions to climate challenges.
The meeting witnessed the participation of eminent personalities including Waleed bin Salman, Vice Chairman of WGEO, Abdulrahim Sultan, Director General of WGEO, Mr. Muhammad Taimur Gandapur, head of UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centers, Mr. Massamba Thioye, head of UN Global Innovation Hub, and Ms. Ana Vukoje, head of Regional Collaboration Centre for MENA and South Asia.
Established in February 2019 through a memorandum of understanding between UN Climate Change and WGEO, with the backing of the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), RCC MENA and SA is committed to advancing the objectives of key climate agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Climate Change Agreement.
Notable among the achievements of RCC MENA and SA is the successful hosting of the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week 2022, a collaborative effort between the UAE Government, MOCCAE, WGEO, and DEWA, which served as a pivotal platform for advancing climate discourse and regional collaboration.
The meeting underscores WGEO’s proactive engagement in global climate fora, notably its participation in the recent Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) hosted by the UAE in Expo City Dubai, where it played a pivotal role in advancing the green economy agenda and fostering global cooperation to combat climate change.
With a steadfast commitment to advancing climate action at both regional and global levels, the collaborative efforts between WGEO and UNFCCC RCC herald a promising trajectory towards a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
