The Albanese Government is committing up to $100 million to the Solar ScaleUp Challenge, a global initiative aimed at reducing costs and expanding Australia’s solar industry, as part of its vision to establish the country as a renewable energy superpower. This effort, supported through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), seeks to foster innovation in the deployment and operation of solar farms.

ARENA’s Solar ScaleUp Challenge invites innovators, customers, financiers, and professionals involved in the construction, operation, or maintenance of solar infrastructure to participate. The challenge will run for eight weeks, offering a platform for participants to submit their ideas and projects online. Shortlisted entries will have the chance to access a share of the $100 million grant funding pool to further develop their concepts.

The international challenge is aligned with ARENAโ€™s goal to decrease the installed cost of solar projects to just 30 cents per watt and to bring down the cost of electricity to below $20 per megawatt hour by 2030. By bringing together diverse teams and encouraging groundbreaking ideas, ARENA aims to make solar energy more affordable on a large scale.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen highlighted the importance of ultra-low cost solar in delivering cheaper and cleaner energy. He emphasized Australia’s leading role in solar technology innovation, noting that the modern solar panel was developed at the University of New South Wales. “This is Australian technology, and we want to see more of the breakthroughs in technology happen here,” Minister Bowen said. He encouraged all organizations supporting solar deployment to participate in the $100 million challenge.

ARENA is partnering with Greenhouse, an organization experienced in running global innovation challenges, including the successful NearZero Steel Challenge. This collaboration aims to leverage Greenhouse’s expertise to ensure the Solar ScaleUp Challenge identifies and supports the most promising innovations in solar energy.

Details about ARENAโ€™s Solar ScaleUp Challenge, including submission requirements and deadlines, are available on the Solar ARENA | Greenhouse Challenge website. The challenge represents a significant opportunity for stakeholders in the solar sector to contribute to Australiaโ€™s renewable energy future and to benefit from substantial funding support.
