World Bank Vice President Diagana Commits To Accelerating Electricity Access In Côte d’Ivoire

World Bank Vice President Ousmane Diagana concluded a pivotal visit to Côte d’Ivoire, emphasizing strengthened collaboration to enhance electricity access across the nation. From July 4 to 10, 2024, Diagana engaged in high-level discussions aimed at accelerating progress towards universal electricity access by 2030, a cornerstone of the World Bank’s regional initiative.

During a technical session at Abidjan’s Sciam building on July 8, 2024, attended by Minister Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy, discussions centered on aligning World Bank support with national priorities for inclusive and sustainable development. Diagana underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s pivotal role in regional electricity provision, citing ongoing infrastructure investments, including the Azito Phase IV extension and the new Ciprel V power plant.

“Côte d’Ivoire is a regional leader with strong electricity potential,” stated Diagana. “Our goal is to ensure that at least 300 million Africans gain access to electricity within six years, leveraging increased financing and private sector involvement.”

Highlighting the fruitful partnership between the World Bank and Côte d’Ivoire, Diagana praised the nation’s progress in expanding electricity infrastructure. He noted over $350 million in World Bank investments in the Ivorian energy sector, affirming commitment to further support through new programs and reforms.

Minister Sangafowa-Coulibaly reciprocated the sentiment, lauding the strategic cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and the World Bank, crucial for advancing national energy goals and bolstering socio-economic development.

The visit concluded with renewed optimism for Côte d’Ivoire’s energy future, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable growth and regional leadership in electricity access.
