The global energy transition is a critical challenge for current and future generations. Despite the dynamic global landscape, many countries are making progress in their energy transitions, with developing nations increasingly becoming central to this shift.

In recent years, global uncertainties have increased due to economic, political, and technological shifts, complicating the environment in which countries operate and their energy transition trajectories. Geopolitical tensions, such as ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, pose risks to energy security and hinder international cooperation. Despite these challenges, some regions, particularly Europe, have made significant strides in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving energy efficiency. Despite these setbacks, global additions to renewable energy capacity increased by 50% compared to 2022, driven by supportive policies and the declining costs of renewable energy technologies. For instance, the European Commission’s revised Renewable Energy Directive introduced “fast-tracking” permitting procedures to accelerate the deployment of renewables and grids.

The energy transition is recognized as one of the most urgent challenges of our time. As energy businesses strive to meet their sustainability goals, generative AI is emerging as a powerful ally. This AI revolution arrives at a critical time, offering the potential to reduce costs, scale technologies, reskill the workforce, and attract significant investments. Accenture’s research indicates that generative AI could triple the industry’s investment from approximately $40 billion annually to over $140 billion by 2030.

Generative AI can drive the energy transition through three key opportunities: speeding up the delivery and execution of capital projects, enhancing asset efficiency and productivity, and improving supply-demand management and trading. For example, AI can optimize the angle of solar panels or the pitch of wind turbine blades in real time, maximizing energy capture and ensuring power availability during peak demand periods. Additionally, AI can handle vast amounts of data to predict and respond to energy demand, potentially flattening the energy demand curve and reducing the need for extensive physical infrastructure investments.

To fully realize the benefits of generative AI, companies must access the right data and establish a strong digital foundation.
