Christopher Cutajar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Trade of Malta, affirmed Malta’s readiness to collaborate with Tunisia on food security, energy transition, and sustainable development. Cutajar’s remarks came during his visit to Tunisia from July 17 to 19, 2024, where he met with Lazhar Bennour, the Director General of Economic and Trade Cooperation at the Ministry of Trade and Export Development.
During their meeting, Cutajar emphasized the potential for Tunisia to enhance its exports to Malta, leveraging the geographical proximity to this EU member country. Bennour and Cutajar highlighted Tunisia’s strategic position, which could play a crucial role in boosting trade dynamics within the Mediterranean region. They also discussed the importance of enhancing cooperation in maritime transport to facilitate trade between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
The Maltese delegation also held discussions with Mounir Ben Rjiba, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad. This meeting underscored the historical friendship between Tunisia and Malta and expressed a mutual desire to deepen these ties through high-level exchanges and preparations for bilateral meetings. One such event is the twelfth Tunisian-Maltese joint commission, planned for the end of this year, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions also explored ways to bolster bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest, including employment, renewable energy, and water resources management. Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote economic growth and sustainable development in the region.
