The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru has awarded Acciona Energía Perú a definitive concession to develop the San José photovoltaic project. This project, located in the district of La Joya in Arequipa, marks the Spanish energy company’s inaugural photovoltaic venture in Peru.
The San José plant will feature an estimated installed capacity of 155.7 megawatts (MW) and will be connected to the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN) via a 9.2-kilometer overhead power transmission line with a 220 kV voltage level, linking it to the San José substation owned by Minera Cerro Verde.
The investment for the San José solar power plant is projected to be approximately $125 million. Acciona Energía Perú previously embarked on renewable energy development in the country with the San Juan de Marcona wind farm, a 131 MW project that commenced construction in 2022.
According to the latest statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Peru had an installed photovoltaic capacity of 332 MW as of the end of 2023.
