Women’s Involvement In Jordan’s Energy Sector On The Rise, Says Ministry Of Energy Secretary-General

The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, highlighted the growing role of women in Jordan’s energy sector at the Fifth CIGRI Jordan Conference, held from June 26-27. Speaking on Thursday, Al-Azzam emphasized that while women’s participation in the energy sector was once challenging, determined efforts to create a supportive environment have led to increased involvement and demand for female professionals in the field.

In her discussion paper titled “The Role of Women in the Energy Sector,” Al-Azzam noted that the Ministry is committed to empowering women across various areas within the energy sector. She attributed the improved work environment for women in the ministry to policies that promote inclusivity and ensure that women can actively engage in their roles, thereby enhancing productivity.

Engineer Reem Hamdan, General Manager of the Electricity Distribution Company, underscored the importance of creating a suitable work environment for women and providing equal opportunities without discrimination. Hamdan pointed out that the company has taken significant steps to empower women, including appointing a woman as the director of subscriber services for the first time, demonstrating a genuine commitment to gender equality.

Khawla Al-Akhras, Executive Vice President for Administrative Affairs at the Jordanian Petroleum Refinery Company, also spoke about the unique nature of women’s work in the refinery. She affirmed the company’s dedication to supporting women by providing the necessary resources and creating an environment where they can perform their duties efficiently.

The conference session on “The Role of Women in the Energy Sector” highlighted the progress and ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in Jordan’s energy industry, showcasing the achievements and contributions of women in this critical sector.
