The Bondi community has marked a significant step towards cleaner and more reliable energy with the launch of its new community battery storage system. Officiated by The Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, and Ms Allegra Spender MP, Member for Wentworth, the 412 kWh battery system is designed to store renewable solar energy, ensuring its availability when needed.
The battery, built by Ausgrid, will support local energy security and grid reliability while putting downward pressure on electricity bills. It also introduces โEnergy Storage as a Service,โ a new initiative in partnership with retailers Origin Energy and EnergyAustralia. This service has the potential to save eligible customers more than $200 annually.
Minister Bowen highlighted the importance of the community battery in increasing access to cleaner energy and improving grid resilience. โThe Bondi battery is a key component of our Reliable Renewables plan, bringing affordable and sustainable energy solutions to communities across the country,โ Bowen said.
Member Spender emphasized the benefits for the Wentworth community, noting that the new battery will provide cleaner, cheaper electricity and extend the advantages of solar energy to renters and apartment dwellers.
The Bondi community battery is part of the Albanese Governmentโs broader initiative to deploy over 400 community batteries nationwide, aimed at democratizing access to renewable energy and enhancing overall energy efficiency.
This launch represents a crucial advancement in Australiaโs journey towards a smarter, more sustainable electricity grid.
