Ethiopia Advances Solar Energy Projects For Water And Agriculture Development

The Honorable Minister of Water and Energy, Dr. E.R. Habtamu Itefa, highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in solar energy development during the 6th African Regional Committee meeting of the International Solar Alliance in Abidjan. The Minister emphasized the crucial role of solar energy in providing clean drinking water and supporting agricultural activities in Ethiopia.

Dr. Itefa presented several ongoing solar energy projects in Ethiopia, developed with the support of the International Solar Alliance. Key initiatives include the expansion of solar mini-grids, rooftop solar systems, and the construction of solar parks. Additionally, the Minister discussed the establishment of a solar energy knowledge enhancement and training center, as well as the development of Ethiopia’s solar energy regulatory framework.

Among the projects showcased was a solar pump project in Yergachefe, Southern Ethiopia, which serves as a model for other African nations. Dr. Itefa also engaged in a separate online discussion with Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance, to strengthen cooperative efforts between Ethiopia and the Alliance.
