In a significant step towards strengthening regional energy cooperation, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) has extended Keppel’s electricity importer license until 2026. This move will support the expansion of the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) and the broader development of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).

Under the expanded LTMS-PIP, the capacity of electricity traded between the participating countries will double, increasing from 100 megawatts (MW) to a maximum of 200 MW. This expansion will be facilitated by the introduction of multidirectional power trade, allowing for additional electricity imports from Malaysia.

Keppel, Singapore’s first cross-border electricity importer, will play a pivotal role in this expansion. By importing electricity from both Lao PDR and Malaysia, Keppel will contribute to the increased grid resilience and energy integration within the ASEAN region.

The LTMS-PIP, launched in 2022, marked a significant milestone in ASEAN’s efforts to promote cross-border electricity trading and renewable energy cooperation. The project’s expansion is expected to further strengthen regional energy security and support the growing demand for electricity in Southeast Asia.
