For the first time, a delegation from Israel’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led by Director General Yossi Dayan, participated in the MEFED (MENA Europe Future Energy Dialogue) conference, marking a significant step in Israel’s role in global energy cooperation. The event, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, brought together key figures from the Middle East, Northern Africa (MENA), and Europe to discuss and strengthen cross-border energy infrastructure initiatives.

During the conference, Director General Dayan endorsed the “Thessaloniki Declaration,” an initiative calling on the MENA and European Union member states to collaborate in the development and acceleration of green energy infrastructure. The declaration aims to address the global climate crisis and align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Yossi Dayan emphasized Israel’s commitment to regional and international cooperation, particularly in advancing the Great Sea Interconnector Project. The project, which seeks to connect Israel’s power grid to Europe’s, is seen as a major step toward establishing Israel as an energy superpower.

Dayan also participated in a panel discussion alongside key energy officials from Greece, Germany, Bulgaria, and the European Union, exploring the mutual benefits of energy partnerships between Europe and the MENA region.

“This conference and the Thessaloniki Declaration represent crucial steps in realizing our vision of a diversified and sustainable energy future for Israel. The Great Sea Interconnector Project will not only enhance Israel’s energy independence but also position us as a significant player in the global energy market,” said Dayan.

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure continues to focus on establishing renewable energy goals for 2035, 2040, and 2045, in line with international objectives. These efforts align with Israel’s broader strategy of transitioning to a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy economy by 2050, in accordance with OECD guidelines.

Israel’s participation in MEFED underscores the country’s growing commitment to renewable energy and its integration into the global energy landscape.
