The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is making significant strides toward achieving self-reliance in the energy sector. With a strong focus on solar and bio-energy, the state government has set ambitious targets aimed at improving energy accessibility and sustainability in the coming years.
Under the ‘PM Suryaghar Yojana,’ the government plans to equip 2.5 million homes with solar panels over the next two and a half to three years. So far, solar panels have already been installed in over 48,000 houses, and by the end of the current financial year, an additional 30,000 homes are expected to benefit from solar energy. This initiative is not just about increasing energy supply; it also aims to promote environmental sustainability by helping households reduce their electricity bills.
In addition to home solar installations, Uttar Pradesh is also working on large-scale utility solar projects. One of the major projects includes the construction of solar parks with a total capacity of 4,800 MW. The tendering process for these solar parks is already underway. Furthermore, the government is planning to establish floating solar projects in seven reservoirs across the state, in collaboration with organizations such as the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC), and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN). The overarching goal is to increase the state’s solar energy production capacity to 14,000 MW by 2027.
The government is not only focused on solar energy but is also taking steps to enhance bio-energy production. The aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in this sector as well. The government has set ambitious targets to increase the production capacity of bio-compressed gas to 1,000 tons per day (TPD), bio-coal to 4,000 TPD, and bio-diesel to 2,000 kiloliters per day (KLPD) within the next two years. Currently, plants producing 210 TPD of bio-compressed gas are operational, and several other projects are in the pipeline. These efforts are expected to reduce pollution levels in the state and create new job opportunities.
To address the future energy demands of Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government has laid out a comprehensive plan to strengthen the power supply infrastructure. This plan considers the establishment of new industries over the next decade. The government is committed to setting up modern power plants and upgrading existing ones to ensure a consistent energy supply. These initiatives will not only guarantee uninterrupted energy access but will also support the state’s industrial growth.
The Yogi government’s focus on solar and bio-energy represents a proactive approach to meet the energy needs of Uttar Pradesh while promoting environmental sustainability and economic development. With substantial projects underway and ambitious targets set, the state is on a path to becoming more self-reliant in its energy sector.
