NETRA, the R&D wing of NTPC, is setting up a groundbreaking 1 TPD (ton per day) seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at NTPC Simhadri, near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The project features an innovative low-carbon desalination system that repurposes waste heat from the thermal power plant’s flue gas, enabling cost-effective conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water.
Producing 1 kilogram of hydrogen typically consumes 12โ13 kilograms of purified water, making water efficiency a critical factor in green hydrogen production. In light of Indiaโs water scarcity challenges, the Government of India is prioritizing technologies that utilize low-grade water sources, such as seawater and wastewater, for hydrogen generation. NTPC Green Energy Limited, a wholly-owned NTPC subsidiary, is spearheading various initiatives to align with the targets set under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, advancing the nation’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
