Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal reviewed the functioning of the power and housing departments during his three-day visit to Leh, Union Territory of Ladakh. During the meetings, officials briefed him on the departments’ achievements and challenges, particularly those arising from the region’s tough terrain. Shri Manohar Lal expressed satisfaction with their work and assured full support to address any shortcomings or difficulties.
The Minister emphasized Ladakh’s vast potential for solar power development, highlighting ongoing efforts to establish a 13 GW solar power plant. This initiative aims to not only meet local energy needs but also contribute significantly to the country’s overall energy demands. He stated that solar energy is a key priority for the Ministry and will play a transformative role in the UT’s development. With Ladakh’s large open spaces and high solar irradiation, the region is uniquely positioned to become a major renewable energy hub in India.
The Minister noted the challenges faced by the Power Department, particularly during the harsh winter months, and assured that additional power demands are being met through the Government of India’s excess quota. He also emphasized the need to address manpower shortages in the department promptly. To improve power supply, distribution lines to the remote Nubra and Zanskar valleys will be set up on a priority basis, ensuring uninterrupted energy access in these regions.
In urban development, Shri Manohar Lal directed that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for water supply and sewage treatment plant projects under AMRUT 2.0 for Leh and Kargil should be finalized without delay. Timely approval and implementation of these projects are expected to improve the quality of life for residents significantly. He also highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to achieving 100% waste material processing in Ladakh and ensuring safe working conditions for sanitation workers.
The Minister announced that a survey would be conducted to identify homeless individuals in Ladakh, enabling them to benefit from the PM Awas Yojana. He assured that no one in the UT would remain without a home. Additionally, financial assistance for street vendors under the PM Swanidhi scheme has been provided, and efforts are ongoing to ensure all eligible vendors are included.
Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, projects worth Rs. 1,080 crore have already been awarded, with work in progress. These initiatives aim to strengthen the region’s power infrastructure.
Shri Manohar Lal’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to sustainable development in Ladakh, focusing on harnessing its solar potential while addressing critical power and housing challenges.
