The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Commission have announced plans to co-host the 10th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Brussels, Belgium, on June 12-13, 2025. The high-profile event aims to accelerate global efforts to double energy efficiency progress by the end of the decade, bringing together ministers, business leaders, and industry representatives to strategize on key initiatives.
Focus on Doubling Energy Efficiency
The conference will address the critical need for stronger policy actions across sectors, including buildings, industry, and transport, to meet the global pledge of doubling energy efficiency by 2030. According to the IEAโs latest analysis, current progress is insufficient, with governments requiring robust measures to close the gap.
Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, underscored the urgency:
โThe current rate of progress in energy efficiency is disappointingly slow, given the critical role it can play in improving energy security, reducing energy costs, and lowering emissions. This conference will provide an opportunity for key stakeholders to assess what can be done to accelerate improvements.โ
EU Commissioner Highlights Global Collaboration
Dan Jรธrgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, emphasized the significance of international cooperation in achieving energy goals:
โThe Commission is honoured to co-host this event and looks forward to welcoming participants from all over the world. Energy efficiency is a cornerstone of decarbonisation and the just transition, and it must be prioritised and mainstreamed.โ
The conference will also explore the role of energy efficiency in enhancing industrial competitiveness and affordability for households and businesses.
Industry Leadership and Collaboration
The event is being held in partnership with the Energy Efficiency Movement, a global initiative driving the adoption of energy-efficient solutions. Mike Umiker, Executive Director of the Movement, stressed the importance of industry engagement:
โIndustries play a key role in accelerating energy efficiency. This conference provides a platform for leaders to share knowledge and collaborate.โ
Building on Nairobiโs Success
The 10th Global Conference follows the successful 9th edition in Nairobi, Kenya, held in May 2024, which marked the first time an African nation hosted the event. More than 650 representatives participated, highlighting the importance of scaling up investments in energy efficiency, particularly in emerging and developing economies.
Stakeholders from across the globe are urged to attend the Brussels conference to help turn ambitious energy efficiency targets into actionable solutions.
