The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are poised to become the first two Union Territories in India to achieve 100 percent renewable energy generation through solar panels and windmills.

The decision was made by the Island Development Agency (IDA) during a meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah. The IDA, established in 2017, is tasked with developing Indiaโ€™s maritime economy while safeguarding the natural ecosystems of its remote islands.

Renewable Energy Push

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has been directed to install solar panels in all households across both island groups, according to a press release from the Indian governmentโ€™s Press Information Bureau. Home Minister Shah emphasized the significance of advancing solar and wind energy initiatives to meet the ambitious target.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Indiaโ€™s easternmost outposts near Southeast Asia, and Lakshadweep, located off the coast of Kerala, are uniquely positioned to harness wind and solar power due to their geographical advantages. Unlike these islands, other Indian States and Union Territories currently lack the capacity to achieve similar renewable energy goals.

Governance and Administration

Indiaโ€™s federal structure comprises 28 States and eight Union Territories. While States are self-governed, Union Territories, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, are administered directly by the federal government in New Delhi.

This initiative marks a significant step in Indiaโ€™s renewable energy ambitions, showcasing the potential of sustainable practices in remote regions while contributing to the countryโ€™s overall environmental goals.
