Honda de México has signed a contract with Iberdrola México for the supply of 100% renewable energy to its manufacturing plants in Celaya, Guanajuato, and El Salto, Jalisco, which will help reduce its carbon footprint. Aparicio explained that the agreement updates the energy source for the Celaya and El Salto plants, which are now supplied with electricity from Iberdrola México’s wind farms under the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM).

Honda de México will use this electricity for its production in the country, where it has the capacity to manufacture up to 200,000 cars annually at its Guanajuato plant and more than 120,000 motorcycles at its Jalisco plant, both for local and export markets.

“The renewable energy supply will prevent the emission of 63,826 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the carbon captured by over 1 million trees over a 10-year period.Honda takes an important step towards the future, addressing a carbon-free society, through our ‘Triple Action to Zero’ initiative, with which we seek carbon neutrality by 2050 and maintain the commitment to serve people around the world, under the principle of expanding the potential of their lives,” said Yuichi Murata, president of Honda de México, in a ceremony at the Santiago wind farm, in the municipality of San Felipe, Guanajuato.

“We celebrate this agreement to provide 100% clean and renewable energy to Honda’s plants in Mexico, a company very committed to protecting the environment and reducing the carbon footprint. With this milestone, we are moving towards a more sustainable and green world, strengthening the shared goal of being net zero companies,” said Vicente Aparicio, Commercial Director of Iberdrola Mexico.

The agreement also includes the acquisition of Guarantees of Origin (GDOs), a certification instrument that allows Honda de México to verify its greenhouse gas reduction efforts by ensuring, with full traceability, that the electricity supply comes from renewable sources.
