Greenpeace and SolarPower Europe Join Forces to Boost Solar Energy in Ukraine

During the second day of SolarPower Europeโ€™s annual SolarPower Summit in Brussels, Nina Schoenian, Managing Director at Greenpeace Germany, Illia Kuksenko, Junior Campaigner at Greenpeace Ukraine, and Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate solar installations across Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

The partnership between Greenpeace and SolarPower Europe aims to speed up the deployment of solar PV systems as part of Ukraine’s sustainable reconstruction and efforts to strengthen its energy resilience. Their collaboration will focus on creating quality jobs, enhancing energy security, and reshaping the economy towards a sustainable and green future, with solar energy as the foundation. They also plan to explore EU-Ukraine Facility opportunities and strengthen solar energy cooperation between the EU and Ukraine.

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, emphasized the crucial role of solar power in ensuring Ukraineโ€™s energy stability. She highlighted that solar PV projects are vital for preventing power outages and keeping hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure operational. She affirmed that the collaboration with Greenpeace will aim to expand solar adoption and safeguard Ukraineโ€™s long-term energy resilience.

Nina Schoenian, Managing Director at Greenpeace Germany, stressed the importance of renewable energy for both Europe and Ukraine. She referenced the “Solar Energy Marshall Plan for Ukraine”, a roadmap by Greenpeace aimed at expanding the countryโ€™s solar capacity. Schoenian noted that adopting solar energy offers Ukraine a dual benefitโ€”overcoming its energy challenges and driving economic growth. She also highlighted the EU’s critical role in realizing this vision and reaffirmed Greenpeaceโ€™s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s energy independence and long-term security.
