The rooftop solar system is a revolution in the renewable energy field. Residential solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana in India has grown to an imposing capacity of over 3 GW in just one year, with a target of reaching 30 GW by 2027. On a global basis, solar adoption is growing faster than fossil fuels by 10 times, and rightly so. 

The cost of solar panels has come down drastically and now it is more economical to harness the sun’s power than ever before. Let’s take the biggest worry out of the way upfront cost. Yes, building the installation of solar panels needs investment upfront; however, the term ‘too expensive’ ignores three facts.

1. Prices Have Drastically Dropped 

Not so long ago, solar panels were for the well-heeled. Today, their price has come down by nearly 60%, thanks to competitive and new technology. The cost of what was once ₹5 lakhs may now be reduced to about 2 lakhs for a standard home system.

At once, most householders saw their electricity bills reduced by more than 50%. In 4-6 years, the system on average pays for itself through savings. After that? Power for free for 20-plus years.

In fact, cold weather contributes to the efficiency: the cooler temperatures reduce thermal losses, and snow would often slide off the inclined panels, reflecting sunlight and increasing output for bifacial systems. A little incremental performance decrease occurs due to high temperatures: panels lose 0.3–0.5% efficiency for each °C rise, but this can be dampened by heat-tolerant material and/or other designs that sustain airflow.

So sure, whether in snowy mountain areas, in very rainy places, or simply hot deserts, this is one kind of technology that supports energy generation all year, provided that the system is well designed.

Myth 3: “Government Subsidy Are Hard to Get” 

Truth: More Accessible Incentives than Ever 

Most people assume that subsidies are either too little or too much effort to claim. Well, that’s not true. Here’s what you might be able to use: 

1. Quick Subsidy Disbursal under PM Surya Yojana

  In India, a massive part of the cost of setting up rooftop solar systems is reimbursed under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which covers up to 40% of installation costs. The customer will be receiving the subsidy within a time span of 1 month to his/her account. It used to take almost a year before that.

2. Deductions and Net Metering 

   – Tax Deductions: Claim income tax rebates for as much as 40 % accelerated depreciation.

   – Net Metering: Emphasis on net metering by the government would enhance the on-grid system demand and would make it economically approachable when compared to battery-based systems.
