The AES Corporation has announced that it has entered into two long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Meta to provide 650 megawatts (MW) of solar energy for the tech giant’s data centers. The renewable energy projects will be developed in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) market, covering regions in Texas and Kansas.
“AES is proud to partner with Meta to deliver reliable and affordable renewable energy that supports their data center growth and ambitious sustainability goals,” said Andrés Gluski, President and Chief Executive Officer of AES. “By providing energy solutions that offer fast time-to-power and low-cost electricity, we continue to be the partner of choice for companies, like Meta, at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation.”
The partnership is aligned with Meta’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, as the company continues to scale its operations with clean energy sources.
“We are thrilled to work with AES to bring forward these two solar energy projects,” said Urvi Parekh, Global Head of Energy at Meta. “These solutions support our goal for 100% clean and renewable energy and will add new generation to the grid in these markets.”
In addition to supporting Meta’s clean energy objectives, the projects are expected to provide significant economic benefits to local communities in Texas and Kansas. This includes the creation of hundreds of construction jobs and the generation of long-term tax revenue to support local schools and counties.
AES currently stands as the largest U.S.-based global power company, operating 32.7 gigawatts (GW) of energy capacity. The company has a development backlog of 12.3 GW in signed PPAs and a robust pipeline of 65 GW. To date, AES has signed 10.1 GW in contractual agreements with major hyperscale technology companies—7.7 GW of which are long-term renewable energy PPAs dedicated to supporting data center operations.
AES’s leadership in clean energy solutions for corporate customers was recently recognized in Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s (BNEF) 2024 Corporate Energy Market Outlook, which ranked AES among the top clean energy providers for corporations for the third consecutive year.
