Zambia Inaugurates Landmark 100 MW Kabwe Solar Project Built by POWERCHINA

Zambia marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with the official launch of the Kabwe 100 MW Solar Project, the largest single photovoltaic (PV) installation by capacity in the country. Developed and constructed by POWERCHINA, the project is set to generate 180 million kWh of clean electricity annually, powering approximately 150,000 households and reducing regional power shortages by 30 percent.

Located in the Chisamba district of Zambia’s Central Province, the project is the first solar initiative by the national utility ZESCO and includes a 100 MW solar power station, a 33/132 kV step-up substation, a 2.7-km double-circuit 132 kV transmission line, and expansion of an existing substation. Its integration into the national grid is expected to significantly enhance infrastructure in central Zambia, improve energy diversity, and bolster the country’s energy security.

Rapid and Innovative Construction

The project, completed in just 10 months, was delivered 40 percent faster than similar solar developments, thanks to innovative practices including assembly line operations and cross-departmental collaboration. The construction team—comprising both local and international workers—installed 66,000 spiral piles in 52 days and completed testing of two main transformers and 20 box transformers within 30 days, achieving zero errors.

To overcome complex technical challenges, the team applied patented methods, allowing the project to progress swiftly from design to commissioning. The achievement is considered a benchmark for efficient solar infrastructure deployment in the region.

Local Impact and Community Development

The Kabwe Solar Project generated over 1,350 jobs, with 96 percent of the workforce hired locally. It also trained 320 skilled technicians, contributing to Zambia’s long-term technical capacity in the renewable energy sector.

Beyond power generation, the project brings tangible community benefits. The construction team drilled wells and built a water retention dam to support local agriculture. In a move to further community development, the construction camp will be repurposed into a school and clinic, enhancing access to education and healthcare in the region.
