Sharjah has officially inaugurated its first solar power plant, โSANA,โ a 60 megawatt-peak (MWp) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) facility developed through a joint venture between Emergeโa partnership between Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and EDFโand the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC).
The project marks a major step in Sharjahโs clean energy transition and will directly power SNOCโs operations, with surplus electricity exported to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA). The initiative is expected to avoid approximately 66,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, reinforcing the emirateโs commitment to sustainability and energy resilience.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries and industry leaders, including His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, who presented a stakeholder appreciation award to Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF Middle East.
Other key attendees included H.E. Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA; Khamis Al Mazrouei, CEO of SNOC; Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar; Abdulaziz Alobaidli, COO of Masdar and Chairman of Emerge; and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge.
The SANA solar plant underscores the UAEโs commitment to achieving its Net Zero by 2050 target and highlights the growing role of public-private partnerships in driving the countryโs renewable energy ambitions.
