In a significant step toward accelerating global clean energy collaboration, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung C&T Corporation to explore opportunities for the development and investment in peaceful nuclear energy projects worldwide.
The agreement leverages ENECโs leadership in nuclear project execution and Samsungโs global expertise in engineering and infrastructure, aiming to boost the development of clean, dispatchable electricity solutions in response to rising global demand.
Under the MoU, both entities will collaborate on a broad range of initiatives, including:
- Investment in new nuclear power plant construction and the restart of decommissioned facilities.
- Exploration of mergers and acquisitions in the United States’ nuclear sector.
- Advancement of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies in the UAE, the U.S., and globally.
- Joint evaluation of hydrogen production opportunities using nuclear energy, particularly in South Korea.
- Investments in U.S.-based nuclear service and equipment companies.
- Assessment and financing of a potential nuclear power plant in Romania.
His Excellency Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, emphasized the critical role of nuclear power in delivering reliable and sustainable energy. โNuclear energy plays a pivotal role in providing clean electricity on a large scale to meet rapidly growing global demand. ENEC has demonstrated that, with the right strategy and partners, nuclear projects can be developed safely, on time, and to the highest international standards,โ he said.
Ose Cheol, CEO of Samsung C&T, highlighted the mutual strengths of both organizations: โNuclear energy plays a key role in ensuring a stable supply of clean energy. By combining the advanced technologies and global relationships our companies have built, we look forward to deepening our cooperation across both large and small nuclear reactor development.โ
This agreement aligns with ENECโs Advanced Nuclear Energy Technologies Program, which aims to accelerate the global deployment of next-generation nuclear reactor technologies. It also supports the UAEโs national goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reinforcing ENECโs role as a catalyst for clean energy innovation and international collaboration.
ENEC is the developer and operator of the four-unit Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, one of the most advanced peaceful nuclear energy programs in the world. The Barakah plant currently produces 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, supplying 25% of the UAEโs total electricity needs and offsetting more than 22 million tons of carbon emissions each year.
With this MoU, ENEC continues to extend its global footprint and deepen its commitment to building strategic partnerships that drive decarbonization, energy security, and long-term sustainable development across global markets.
