Indiaโs flagship rooftop solar programme, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), has provided clean energy benefits to over 16.78 lakh households as of August 5, 2025. The initiative, launched in February 2024, aims to equip one crore residential households with rooftop solar systems by 2026-27.
According to Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, the government has disbursed โน9,280.88 crore as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to beneficiaries under the scheme. Maharashtra leads the nation with 2,34,736 installations, followed by Gujarat with 2,28,507 and Uttar Pradesh with 1,20,866. While most states have made progress, Arunachal Pradesh has reported no installations, and Meghalaya and Sikkim have recorded only six and nine installations respectively.
The scheme, implemented by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), replaced the earlier Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II, which had been operational since March 2019 and was originally extended until March 2026.
The development underscores Indiaโs accelerating transition towards renewable energy, energy self-reliance, and reduced carbon emissions. With steady progress and rising public participation, the scheme is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving Indiaโs solar capacity targets. If momentum continues, it could set a global benchmark for large-scale rooftop solar adoption in the residential sector.
