The Government of India has completed the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), launched in October 2017, with over 2.86 crore households electrified across the country. The scheme, which aimed to provide electricity connections to all willing un-electrified rural households and poor urban households, officially closed on March 31, 2022, following the completion of all sanctioned works.

According to a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik, efforts are continuing under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to bring electricity to left-out households based on surveys by utilities. This includes electrification drives targeted at Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) households under PM-JANMAN, tribal households under DA-JGUA, Scheduled Caste households under PM-AJAY, and families in remote and border areas under the Vibrant Village Program (VVP), wherever feasible.

So far, projects worth ₹6,487 crore have been sanctioned under RDSS to electrify 13.59 lakh households across India.

In addition, under the New Solar Power Scheme, works worth ₹50 crore have been approved for off-grid solar-based electrification of 9,961 households as of June 30, 2025.

The government said these measures reflect its continued commitment to universal household electrification and to ensuring reliable access to energy, particularly for marginalized and remote communities.
