The National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG), Portugal’s leading research institution in sustainable energy and geological sciences, has been an active member of the European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance (ESEIA) since 2009. Over the past sixteen years, LNEG has collaborated with ESEIA’s wide network of universities, research organisations, and industry partners to exchange knowledge, encourage innovation, and support Europe’s transition towards clean energy.
As part of this collaboration, LNEG has contributed to significant European projects, including the BioEnergyTrain and Phoenix initiatives, which focused on advancing both research excellence and practical solutions for sustainable energy systems. Building on this experience, a new EU project is currently being developed, which will further expand the joint contributions of LNEG and ESEIA in shaping Europe’s energy landscape.
Teresa Ponce de Leão, President of LNEG and Vice-President of ESEIA, “Our shared mission is to deliver science-based solutions that respond to the urgent challenges of the energy transition, while creating long-term value for society and the economy. Membership in ESEIA has opened new opportunities for impactful cooperation at European level.”
Today, LNEG continues to take an active role in joint research activities, training programmes, and strategic projects that align with the European Green Deal and the SET-Plan. Through these efforts, LNEG and ESEIA aim to strengthen research capabilities, influence the development of energy policies, and promote the large-scale adoption of renewable technologies. Together, these initiatives contribute to the creation of a resilient and low-carbon energy system for the future of Europe.
