PLDT Inc. has begun sourcing renewable energy (RE) to power 17 of its high-consumption facilities, including its two flagship offices in Makati City, in line with the companyโs ongoing decarbonization efforts.
The Ramon Cojuangco Building and the Makati General Office, both located in the Makati Central Business District, register a combined monthly electricity demand of over 2,200 kilowatts (kW). PLDT said the transition to RE for these and other facilities is expected to reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 18,000 tCOโe annually.
The initiative is being implemented under a supply agreement with MPower, Meralcoโs retail electricity unit, through the Competitive Retail Electricity Market (CREM). In total, the program covers PLDT facilities with an aggregate monthly demand exceeding 15,000 kW.
โEmbracing renewable energy is a strategic step in transforming how we power connectivity. As our customers โ whether large enterprises or individual consumers โ are becoming more conscious of sustainability, we are evolving alongside and building a network that is not only reliable and far-reaching but also aligned with a greener future,โ said Menardo โButchโ Jimenez, Jr., PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network.
PLDT Property and Facilities Management Head, Leo Gonzales, noted that the transition supports both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. โAs the business grows, we continuously seek efficiencies amid increasing power and resource requirements. This transition to RE helps us achieve these while reducing the environmental footprint of our operations,โ he said.
Beyond Makati, PLDT and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. have also enrolled 153 additional sites under the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), enabling smaller facilities to shift to renewable energy. The group aims to expand RAP coverage in the Visayas and Mindanao regions by the end of 2025.
According to PLDTโs Chief Sustainability Officer, Melissa Vergel de Dios, the renewable energy shift is central to the companyโs long-term sustainability roadmap. โThe continuing integration of RE into our power mix supports our goal of ensuring that our business existence extends into the future and responds to the evolving expectations of our stakeholders,โ she said.
Complementing its clean energy initiatives, PLDT is also replacing copper lines with fiber technologyโknown to consume less energyโand deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize Smartโs cell site operations nationwide.
PLDT has set a target to cut its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 from 2019 levels, aligning its climate strategy with global Net Zero objectives.
