Gentari, Gamuda Partner on 1.5 GW Solar Project to Power Malaysia’s Data Centers

Malaysian clean energy provider Gentari and engineering and construction firm Gamuda have joined forces to develop 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity to support the growing power needs of hyperscale data centers in Malaysia.

Gentari said in a statement Monday that its unit, Gentari Renewables Sdn Bhd, together with Gamuda Energy Sdn Bhd, will build large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants paired with battery energy storage systems (BESS). The projects are being developed under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).

The new capacity will help meet surging demand from hyperscale data centers – critical facilities for cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital services – which are projected to require more than 5 GW of reliable power by 2035.

Gentari Chief Renewables Officer Low Kian Min said the partnership underscores the firm’s commitment to advancing Malaysia’s clean energy transition. “Expanding renewable energy capacity is not only critical for meeting rising demand but also key to driving long-term growth. At Gentari, we are committed to working with partners like Gamuda to deliver practical, scalable clean energy projects that advance the nation’s net-zero ambitions,” he said.

Gentari currently has more than 8 GW of installed and under-construction renewable energy capacity across its markets.

Gamuda Energy Director Joshua Kong Sing Hoe highlighted the strategic importance of clean energy in strengthening Malaysia’s investment appeal. “Availability of clean energy is a critical factor for attracting and retaining foreign direct investment from the world’s leading technology companies. With our combined strengths and bankability, we can support data center partners with a sustainable and scalable renewable energy pipeline,” he said.

Both firms said the collaboration will not only accelerate Malaysia’s renewable energy transition but also reinforce the nation’s position as a regional hub for the digital economy.
