The Bailundo Photovoltaic Park in Huambo Province, Angola, was officially inaugurated in early September, marking the completion of the country’s 370 megawatt-peak (MWp) Solar Photovoltaic Project. This large-scale renewable energy initiative is a strategic step forward in Angola’s energy transition, aiming to deliver long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. Designed and built by the Portuguese MCA Group, the Bailundo facility is the seventh and final plant in the project, representing a major milestone in Angola’s shift toward sustainable energy.

The 370 MWp project was developed by an international consortium led by MCA Group and the American company Sun Africa. Spread across multiple provinces, the seven photovoltaic plants now supply clean, sustainable electricity to approximately 2.4 million people. By replacing traditional diesel-based power generation, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by about one million tonnes annually and avoid the consumption of roughly 1.4 million litres of diesel each year, significantly lowering pollution levels and operating costs.

For Bailundo, a municipality of around 373,000 residents that has struggled with irregular energy supplies and frequent blackouts, the new photovoltaic park offers a critical improvement in electricity production and distribution. The additional capacity will help stabilise the local power grid, provide more reliable access to energy, and support economic and social development in the region.

Manuel Couto Alves, Chairman of the MCA Group, stated, “The completion of all the photovoltaic parks in the 370MW Solar Project in Angola is an achievement that makes us very proud as a company. This project represents not only a technical challenge overcome with excellence, but also a significant transformation in the quality of life of the communities involved. At MCA, quality is the keyword in our daily work. We are demanding of our people, services, and technological solutions, always with the aim of contributing to a more sustainable world.”

The MCA Group has emphasized that its projects are driven by sustainability and social responsibility. Beyond energy generation, the company invests in essential infrastructure such as water supply systems, roads, and other development projects to improve quality of life in the communities it serves. MCA also partners with local institutions through its social responsibility programmes to provide access to basic needs and education. Through its four main business areas—Energy, Urban Development, Infrastructure, and Health—the company aims to build more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable communities across Angola and beyond.
