The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) has commissioned a 25,000 liters per day (25 KLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at the India International Centre (IIC) Annexe in New Delhi as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This project represents a significant step toward creating sustainable urban infrastructure. The STP was officially inaugurated by Dr. Bijay Kumar Mohanty, Director (Finance) of IREDA, and Shri Shyam Saran, President of IIC and former Foreign Secretary of India.
The modern facility is designed to improve IICโs operations by reducing environmental impact and supporting greener practices. It will generate electricity from the sludge produced by biodegradable waste sourced from toilets, bathrooms, and kitchens. Additionally, the plant will recycle treated wastewater for horticulture and industrial applications while minimizing foul discharge, making it an important example of resource-efficient infrastructure. During the inauguration, Dr. Mohanty highlighted the importance of sustainable practices in achieving Indiaโs climate goals.
He commended IIC for taking a pioneering role in utilizing sewage waste to produce green energy and recycle resources. Senior officials from IREDA and IIC, including Shri K.N. Shrivastava, Director of IIC, attended the ceremony, reflecting the strong institutional support for this initiative. In a message shared for the occasion, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA, noted that the agencyโs CSR activities are focused on impactful projects like this STP, which combine community welfare with green innovation.
He added that such efforts contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability and create benchmarks for others to emulate. This project underscores IREDAโs commitment to promoting sustainable technologies and supports the broader vision of integrating renewable energy and resource management solutions into urban settings. By funding and implementing initiatives like this, IREDA continues to play a key role in advancing Indiaโs transition toward environmentally responsible infrastructure and practices.
