Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, has announced the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon for energy from a new solar project, Oregon Trail Solar. The facility, with a capacity of 57 MWdc (41 MWac), will be located in Gilliam County, Oregon, and will supply renewable energy to Amazon data centers in the region. The project is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.

Jose Antonio Miranda, CEO of Avangrid, highlighted that the agreement reflects the commitment of both companies to provide reliable energy solutions that support Americaโ€™s growing energy needs and critical infrastructure. He noted that Oregon Trail Solar strengthens Avangridโ€™s presence in Oregon and builds on its partnership with Amazon, delivering economic benefits to local communities, enhancing energy independence, and maximizing energy production.

Oregon Trail Solar is the second recent renewable energy PPA between Avangrid and Amazon in the Pacific Northwest, following a prior agreement for power from the Leaning Juniper IIA repower project, also in Gilliam County. Beyond Oregon, Avangrid and Amazon have agreements for renewable energy projects in Illinois, Ohio, and North Carolina.

The construction of Oregon Trail Solar is expected to create approximately 200 jobs, primarily for local union labor, and will involve the installation of over 100,000 solar panels. The project will generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of about 10,000 U.S. homes. Sy Oytan, CEO of Avangrid Power, emphasized that the project demonstrates the companyโ€™s commitment to working with local communities to build Americaโ€™s energy future while meeting increasing national energy demand.

In addition to construction jobs, operations at Oregon Trail Solar will support several new full-time positions in the local community. Over its lifetime, the project is expected to contribute around $6 million in combined payments in lieu of taxes (PILOTs) and property taxes to Gilliam County, supporting schools, infrastructure, and other public services.

Oregon Trail Solar further strengthens Avangridโ€™s longstanding presence in Oregon, where the company has operated projects since 2001. Today, Avangrid manages 2.5 GW of capacity in the state, maintains its National Training Center in neighboring Sherman County, and operates a large corporate office in Portland.
