Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities (GSU) has inaugurated the Noor Chad 50 MW Solar PV Plant in N’Djamena, marking the first project of its scale in the country’s renewable energy sector. The facility will supply clean electricity to an estimated 274,000 homes.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mahamat Ahmad Alhabo, Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic of Chad, alongside several ministers, GSU CEO and Managing Director Ali Alshimmari, and UAE Ambassador to Chad Rashid Al Shamsi.
Equipped with a 5 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), the plant is expected to displace more than 1.36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. GSU will operate the facility, which aims to cut Chad’s dependence on imported diesel and deliver reliable, large-scale renewable power.
“This is the first project we have delivered from signature to commissioning in Africa,” said Alshimmari. “It proves how quickly these markets can move when there is determination and effective partnerships. At its heart, this project is about people—about enabling families, communities, and nations to thrive with the stability that clean power brings.”
The project, completed in record time, involved over 350,000 safe work-hours and the installation of more than 81,000 solar panels and 158 inverters. GSU said Noor Chad will serve as a model for future renewable projects in the country and is part of its wider clean energy portfolio across Africa, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development in the Global South.
