At a special ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Brussels, King Philippe of Belgium conferred one of the nationโs highest civilian honors on Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Dr. Birol was appointed as a Grand Officer in the Order of Leopold, an honor reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership over the course of their careers. King Philippe commended Dr. Birol for his outstanding contributions to advancing global energy cooperation and policy development.
He highlighted Dr. Birolโs long-standing dedication to improving energy access across Africa, particularly his efforts to promote electricity access and clean cooking solutions in underserved regions. Their presence reflected the deep respect and recognition Dr. Birol commands in the global energy community.
In his remarks, Dr. Birol expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Philippe for the honor, dedicating the recognition to his colleagues at the International Energy Agency.
